Frequently Asked Questions

How does this online learning program work?
This is a self-directed learning program designed to encourage students to take control of their own learning through exploration and play. There are no face to face classes or workshops, though Librarians are supporting the program as mentors. Class assignments are not limited to any one computer but may be done on your home, school or public library computer. We encourage you to work together and share your discoveries, techniques, and “how-tos” with other participants via your blog posts. It if your decision whether each member of the family creates their own blog or if you have a family blog. If you choose to participate as a family only one prize will be given to the group blog on completion of the course.

Is there any tech support?
We can help you with the course assignments but not with your computer or Internet connections.
Here are a few hints:
Web sites often respond differently to different browsers. We would suggest you use FireFox or Internet Explorer and make sure they are the latest version.
If an application is stalled you can try hitting the reload button or closing it down and reopening it again.
Firewalls and filters are good for security but can at times block you from accessing your links. You can decide if you wish to disable them or try another site.
Check your browser settings to make sure your pop-up windows are enabled and that you are set to allow cookies.
There are a lot of tutorials free online. Go to Google and type your problem in the best way you can explain it Even if you are not sure the correct terminology if you describe your problem in plain English you will probably get links of suggestions from other users who have had the same situation.
Remember that things change frequently online. Links may no longer work or sites might close down.
If you are still stuck contact Mercedes (mbleattl@largo.com) to set up a Recess session with someone at the library.

Do I need to download any software to my computer?
Flash is required to view many of the applications. If this is not already installed on your computer click here for a free download. Adobe Reader is also needed to read a few of the suggested links. You can download it free here. Java may need to be enabled for some applications. Here is a link to enable Java.

How do I track my progress for the program?
Each patron who chooses to participate will be required to keep a blog to track their progress, thoughts and impressions. Those blogs will serve as a record and repository for the program.

How is the program paced? Can I start later than the the program later than the June 12 kick off?
We will post weekly assignments starting June 12. You may start the program at any point but only those participants who have completed their work by August 13 will be eligible for the prize.

Can I participate anonymously?
Since you can control all the information that you share on your blog, you can choose to use a screen name that does not reveal your identity to the public, but our Librarians will know your identity to provide mentoring and track your participation.
